According to the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Joan went into a hypoxic arrest during her throat procedure which cut off oxygen to her brain therefore causing her death.
The examiner called the problem a 'predictable complication' that happened and they also found out that Joan was sedated using Propofol. So, basically, Joan had severe brain damage due to the lack of oxygen.
However, the 'predictable complication' just means that what happened to her is a general side effect using anesthesia. AKA it can happen to anyone.
Ugh. We're still so sad that Joan is gone, but at least her family can rest easy knowing what exactly went wrong.
