Ebola Scare Rocks Kaduna As ABU Student Shows Symptoms

A middle aged man from Zaria, Kaduna State, has been put into isolation at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, for exhibiting symptoms of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

Confirming the incident to Channels Television on Tuesday, the State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Thot Dogo, said that the hospital authorities alerted the ministry when they suspected that the man, who is an undergraduate of ABU, Zaria, started showing symptoms of Ebola like high fever and rashes on his body over a week after he was admitted at the hospital.

He said that the blood sample of the patient has been taken to a laboratory in Lagos for tests, with the result expected to come out by Tuesday.


He said that the outcome of the laboratory result would determine further actions, stating that the State Government had provided the hospital management with protective equipment for its team of medical personnel attending to the patient.

The Public Relations Officer, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Bilyaminu Umar, while confirming the case to an online media when contacted via phone said that the student was diagnosed at ABUTH, Shika, Zaria, and that he showed some symptoms associated with the the disease.

“Yes, there was a case of a suspected Ebola patient. He is with the Faculty of Law, ABU, Zaria and will be placed on isolation. I am out of town, but will confirm details on my return from a trip,” he said.

However, experts have said that not all patients who manifest some symptoms of the virus end up testing positive to the disease.
