In a telephone conversation with NET, Kimono (real name Ukeleke Onwubuya) expressed his excitement over the new addition to his family. ‘A baby is always a thing of Joy and so me ah Bless Jah for his goodness’, he said in his usual patoi expression. Kimono already has three from his wife Sybil and another from a previous relationship.
Sybil and Kimono met at the University of Lagos where he used to go for rehearsals. They got married in 1990 and Sybil became his manager for many years even when the couple relocated to the US in the early 2000s.
Recently in May, Sybil and Kimono were spotted together at Fred Amata’s 50th birthday celebration at the MUSON Centre in Lagos.
Following the footsteps of the legendary reggae artiste, one of his daughters, Ogechukwu Onwubuya a.k.a. Oge Kimono has already taken to music putting out a few reggae singles.
Between the late 80s and late 90s, Kimono topped music charts across Africa with dancehall hits ‘Under Pressure’, ‘Rumba stylee’ and many others spurring many awards and global tours.
After a long hiatus from the entertainment scene in Nigeria, the multi award winning reggae icon returned in 2009 in an effort to reconnect with his fans. Kimono released albums in 2009 and 2011, both albums unable to meet expectations.
