Oyo: Tribunal Throws Out Ladoja’s Petition, Upholds Ajimobi’s Election

The Oyo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed the petition filed by the candidate of Accord Party, Sen. Rashidi Ladoja against the election of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Chairman of the three-man panel, Justice Mohammed Mayaki, held that Ladoja and Accord “failed woefully” to prove their allegations of rigging, electoral malpractices, violence and non-compliance with the Electoral Act among others, beyond reasonable doubt.

Power Generation Drops To 660MW At Egbin Power Plant

Power generation has dropped from 813 megawatts to 660 at the Egbin Power Plant in Lagos State, an official said on Tuesday.

The plant, the nation’s biggest power generating outfit, has the capacity to contribute about 1,000 megawatts to the national grid.

An authoritative source at the plant told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the drop was as a result of the ongoing maintenance of Egbin lines by the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC).

Police Release 17 Protesting Members Of Biafra (Details)

The 17 protesting members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who were arrested by the Anambra State Police Command, have been released. Police spokesman Ali Okechukwu said those released were 13 women and four men who were protesting the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu.

They were warned by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hosea Karma, not to breach the public peace again.According to a statement by Okechukwu after the arrest said:

Electricity Tariff Hike: Consumers Should Not Be Made To Pay For Inefficiency Or Corruption Costs – LCCI

Nigerians have reacted to last week’s announcement by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) that a new tariff regime would become effective from November 1.

An advocacy group, Nigerian Electricity Consumers Advocacy (NECAN), in its reaction, said the recent “consultations” on tariff carried out by electricity distribution companies (DISCOS) were a mere trick to justify tariff hike.

“We believe NERC is allowing the public to be over billed by allowing the DISCOs justify the increases. Otherwise, how can it be explained NERC allowed a tariff hike of 12.5 to 48 percent in January, and allowing same percent in October of that same year?” NECAN President, Mr. Tomi Akingbogun, said.

Tribunal Annuls 20 Rivers Lawmakers’ Election, Orders Rerun

The Rivers State legislative election petition tribunals sitting in Abuja yesterday nullified the election of 20 out of the 32 members of the state House of Assembly.

The four tribunals, in separate judgments yesterday, upheld the petitions by candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election and ordered rerun in the affected constituencies.

The nullification of the 20 lawmakers’ election came about 48 hours after the Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal also annulled the election of Governor Nyesom Wike and ordered a rerun.

New Task Force Brigade Established To End Boko Haram, Says Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Monday said that the new 29 Task Force Brigade in Beneshiek, Borno State, was strategically established to end insurgency.

Buratai made this known in his address to soldiers deployed to the new brigade in Beneshiek and Ngamdu.

“This location is very important and strategic, it has great impact toward defeating the Boko Haram group.
“You are better trained and equipped than the criminals and you have to be professional and responsive.
“You should have no excuse not to be on patrol, ambush or raid operations”, he charged the soldiers.

Election Tribunal Sacks 10 House Of Assembly Members In Rivers State

The River state House of Assembly election petition tribunal has reportedly nullified the election of 10 House of Assembly members in the state. The judgment was delivered on Monday, October 26. This was disclosed on the Twitter handle of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Recall that the tribunal had at the weekend, sacked Nyesom Wike as the governor of the state and ordered that a rerun be conducted. After the tribunal’s verdict, Wike made it known that that he will appeal the judgment.

Today, election tribunals all over the country has decided more than two petitions filed before it, challenging April 11 elections.

Processed Meat: Suya, Sausages, Bacon Causes Cancer – WHO

Processed meats – such as bacon, sausages and ham – do cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Its report said 50g of processed meat a day – less than two slices of bacon – increased the chance of developing colorectal cancer by 18%. BBC reports:

Meanwhile, it said red meats were “probably carcinogenic” but there was limited evidence. The WHO did stress that meat also had health benefits. Cancer Research UK said this was a reason to cut down rather than give up red and processed meats. And added that an occasional bacon sandwich would do little harm.

European Leaders Commit To More Shelter For Refugees

European Union and Balkan leaders have agreed a 17-point plan to cooperate on managing arrival of refugees through the Balkan peninsula, the European Commission has said. Among measures agreed at the meeting in Brussels on Sunday evening were that 100,000 places in reception centres should be made available along the route from Greece toward Germany. The UN refugee agency would help establish them.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has reacted to a statement credited to Rev. Chris Okotie that its President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, ‘deceived’ former President Goodluck Jonathan into contesting the 2015 presidential election.

Okotie, who is the General Overseer of Household of God Church, Lagos, had while delivering a sermon in his church on Sunday, accused the CAN president of giving Mr. Jonathan hope of victory in the election with his ‘false’ prophecy.

The then president went into the March 28 presidential election confident of victory only to be defeated by the then opposition’s candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
