Pres. Jonathan Launch New N100 Naira Notes Today

President Goodluck Jonathan today formally unveiled the new N100 commemorative notes at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, the new notes were issued to commemorate the 100 years of the nation’s amalgamation. Adding that they were produced with what he described as most advanced security features in the world.

Jonathan at the event, lauded the CBN for coming up with the commemorative note, though it was coming a bit late since activities marking the nation’s centenary had been concluded. The short ceremony which was initially scheduled for last Wednesday did not hold then because of the President’s journey to Burkina Faso. Another pic below...

The effects of chronic marijuana use on the brain may depend on age of first use and duration of use, according to researchers at the Center for Brain Health at The University of Texas at Dallas. In a paper published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), researchers for the first time comprehensively describe existing abnormalities in brain function and structure of long-term marijuana users with multiple magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. Findings show chronic marijuana users have smaller brain volume in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), a part of the brain commonly associated with addiction, but also increased brain connectivity.

“We have seen a steady increase in the incidence of marijuana use since 2007,” said Dr. Francesca Filbey, Director of the Cognitive Neuroscience Research in Addictive Disorders at the Center for BrainHealth and Associate Professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas. “However, research on its long-term effects remains scarce despite the changes in legislation surrounding marijuana and the continuing conversation surrounding this relevant public health topic.”

CNN Turns Down Political Adverts From Nigerian politicians

According to reports, for you to place an advert on Cable News Network (CNN), you could pay as much as N5 Million for a 30 second advert at prime time. Surprisingly our 9ja politicians are more than ready to pay and ensure that their campaign plans are aired. However, CNN has refused to accept any form of political jingles. A consultant to a presidential said,

“We approached CNN agents in Nigeria to place some adverts for our principal. We sent the creatives to them as requested and they returned them, saying they do not run commercials that are intended to campaign for votes. We could not believe it,”

Another, who is working for a state governor seeking re-election, said he had a similar experience.

An official of CNN said that it is a general rule not to accept certain advertisements and there was no discrimination against Nigerian politicians.

How Boko Haram Violence Forced 13,000 Nigerians to take refuge in Cameroon

According to the report, Which was released Yesterday, November 11th by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 13,000 Nigerian refugees mostly women and children, fled Mubi town in over 300 vehicles and settled in towns of Guider and Gashiga in the North region of Cameroun and to Bourha, Mogode and Boukoula in the Far North of Cameroon.

Although some Cameroonian nationals say most of the Nigerians that arrived their villages have returned to Nigeria and have settled at the refugee camps set up in Yola, Adamawa state capital, UNHCR say it is investigating claims that those who returned to Nigeria were forcefully sent back.

"We are also examining claims that some of these refugees may have been forced to return to Nigeria. We are seeking assurances from both Nigeria and Cameroun that the return of these people was done on a voluntary basis. Cameroun is hosting thousands of refugees from Nigeria and Central African Republic and we encourage Cameroon to continue with its policy of welcoming refugees."

In a bid to make his message on adultery very effective, a male pastor from South Africa has resulted to wearing female clothes while preaching. 42-year-old Douglas Dlamini from Daantjie Trust outside Mbombela, Mpumalanga, walks the street in female clothes and accessories, warning men against spending their family income on prostitutes. He also uses his music to spread his monogamy message to people living around the capital city.

“My dress code attracts a lot of attention to what I have to say. It has been very effective because people are able to listen and learn something. I am of the view that prostitution should never be legalised because it splits families, spreads sexually transmitted diseases, increases poverty and encourages the rape of street kids and homeless people,” said Dlamini, during a recent sermon in Mbombela.

According to Daily Sun Mobi, Dlamini, who has been singing since 2004, said many men who have sex with prostitutes have reported being robbed. “The women would expose their private parts at taverns and perform lap dances. The men end up buying sex while they are drunk. Then they get robbed and their families are left with no money,” he said. The pastor admits that he got help with his marketing strategy.

Nigeria U20 Falconet, Courtney Dike, has finally explained why she rejected the $7000 bonus given her by the government.An acceptance of the bonus would have meant losing her almost $35,000 annual football scholarship at the Oklahoma State University under NCAA rules.

In her statement via the office of the media officer of the Nigeria Football Federation,the 19 year old said.

“I would like to respond to what I have been reading on the internet about rejecting bonuses. I am delighted to play for Nigeria whenever called upon.
