Nigerian Man Arraigned for Allegedly Raping Cameroonian Woman

A 34-year-old man, Fabian Anyanwu, who allegedly assaulted and raped a 22-year-old Cameroonian woman, on Monday appeared before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. Anyanwu, a resident of 721 Road, D Close, Block 2, Festac Town, Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of assault and rape.

The prosecutor,  John Iberedem, told the court that the accused committed the offenses on August  15 at his residence. Iberedem said that the accused assaulted and forcefully had carnal knowledge of the complainant.

Ebola: Rivers Government to Shut Down Schools Without Pipe-borne Water

The Rivers Government on Monday warned that it would shut down any primary or secondary school without pipe borne water. Alice Nemi, the State Commissioner for Education, gave the warning in Port Harcourt during a sensitization workshop for teachers in the state on Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was jointly organised by the state ministries of education and health for teachers in public and private schools. The commissioner said that potable water would ensure that the teachers, pupils and students washed their hands regularly with soap. Nemi, however, did not say when inspection of the schools would start to know schools without the facility.

NAN reports that regular hand washing and avoidance of body contact are essential to prevent the spread of Ebola virus. Continue...

4 dead,1 missing as boat capsizes in Lagos

Barely a month after a speed boat capsized in Bayeku area of Ikorodu leaving many dead, another speed boat belonging to Oke’ra-Nla Boat Association in Ajah area of Lagos, weekend capsized leaving four persons dead while one is still missing at press time.

According to Vanguard:
The boat with 22 passengers was heading towards Bayeku from Oke-Ira.There were conflicting accounts of what led to the accident. While some attributed it to the boat colliding with a log of wood, another account said it was caused by boisterous water waves.

An eye witness who pleaded anonymity said the boat was hit from behind by another boat which was on top speed. Both were said to have been hit by water waves and could not help the situation as the one behind allegedly lost control and hit the ill-fated boat which then capsized.

Boko Haram Kidnap 50 Women In Adamawa

According to Daily Trust, members of the Boko Haram sect have kidnapped at least 50 young women from Gulak town on Saturday. Residents who ran away reportedly told the newspaper.  A man known as Tija told reporters that he was trapped in a village near Gulak before his subsequent escape on Sunday. According to him,

“Some women brought the news that Boko Haram forcefully took some of them away including a sister in law to a friend of mine." The women were loaded on to several vans and then taken away. The situation is getting worse by the day, our hope is that this problem will end one day”. Continue...

INSURGENCY: Nigeria, Russia Sign Contract for Mi-171Sh, Mi-35 Helicopters

MOSCOW, (RIA Novosti) – Russia and Nigeria have signed a contract for the supply of Mi-171Sh and Mi-35 helicopters. Rosoboronexport deputy general director Sergei Goreslavsky told reporters Friday.

"The Mi-171Sh machine is in steady demand on the foreign market. A contract with Nigeria was recently signed," Goreslavsky said, commenting on the August contract. According to him, the helicopter is in demand in Africa, and Mozambique is very interested in the rotorcraft.

Rosoboronexport's top manager said several Mi-35M"s will be also sent to Nigeria, without specifying the number of machines under the contract.

Boko Haram Sponsorship: Modu Sheriff Fires Back At Soyinka

The former governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has fired back at Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, for referring to him as a sponsor of the Boko Haram sect in his recent article, ‘The Wages of Impunity’.

“Of the complicity of ex-Governor Sheriff in the parturition of Boko Haram, I have no doubt whatsoever, and I believe that the evidence is overwhelming”, Soyinka said in the article, which also faulted President Goodluck Jonathan for being found in company of the ex-governor during his recent state visit to N’djamena, Chad.

But in his reaction yesterday, Sheriff said Soyinka was only entertaining Nigerians with his mastery of the English language.

Speaking through Mr. Inuwa Bwala, the Commissioner of Information and Home Affairs under his administration, Sheriff said: "As the ‘cultist’ we know him (Soyinka) to be, being the founder of a confraternity for which the world is still waiting for answers from him, he is the least morally qualified to speak on the alleged involvement of any Nigerian in whatever crime.

70 Missing as Ferry Sinks in Phillipines

A ferry sank off the central island of Leyte in the Philippines on Saturday evening in the midst of bad weather. At least 84 people were on the ferry. However, 14 have been rescued so far, and 70 are missing. Yahoo News reports.

Rescue operations are still ongoing. According to report,"The ferry had problems with steering and had also been buffeted by heavy rains, worsened by Typhoon Kalmaegi which is approaching the northern Philippines."
