Nurse Who Contracted Ebola Virus From Patrick Sawyer tells her story (Photo)

One of the nurses, Obi Justina Ejelonu, that cared for Patrick Sawyer during his stay at First Consultant Hospital Obalende, has recounted her experience with him. She was previously working at Otunba Tunwase National Peadiatric Centre Ijebu Ode in Ogun state before relocating to Lagos to work at First Consultant Hospital Obalande months ago. Last week she posted the message below on a Facebook group page that organises free medical services:

“I never contacted his fluids .i checked his Vitals, helped him with his food.(he was too weak)…..i basically touched where his hands touched and dats d only contact. not directly wt his fluids.@a stage, he yanked off his infusion and we had blood everywhere on his bed…..but d ward maids took care of that and changed his linens with great precaution. Every patient is treated as high risk ….if it were airborne, by now wahala for dey. i still thank God.” Continue...

Ghana Records First Case of Ebola!!

Ghana may now have recorded her first Ebola case. Reports say a Burkinabe man, who had fever and bled from his nose and ears was rushed to Bawku Presby Hospital in the Upper East Region from Burkina Faso Friday afternoon.

The man had come down with a fever while in neighbouring Burkina Faso and was taken to a hospital for treatment in that country but saw no improvement in his condition. His relatives then decided to transport him across the common border between Burkina Faso and Ghana’s Upper East region, for proper care. But he died on the way. The Medical Director at the hospital, Dr Joseph Yaw Manu, confirmed to StarrFMonline.com that the man had died at the time he was brought in, saying:

What scared me most as a medical doctor is that he was bleeding from his ears and nose– symptoms of Ebola.” Continue...

So Sad!!! Pregnant Woman tests positive for Ebola in Lagos

A pregnant woman who went for her usual check up at the First Consultant Hospital Obalande – same hospital that Patrick Sawyer was admitted - tested positive of the virus on Friday. She got infected after being treated by the same nurse, Obi Justina Ejelonu, who attended to the Liberian carrier, Patrick Sawyer.

Recall that two nurses came in direct contact with Mr. Sawyer and one of them died this week – the other nurse, Justina is still alive. The pregnant woman has since been quarantined at the mainland hospital where there is an isolation emergency centre for Ebola virus victims.

It came as a surprise to many that Genevieve wasn't picked up as a Glo ambassador instead she was signed on by Etisalat. They were reports that the deal didn't pull through because she referred them to her manager and even when Mike Adenuga personally called her, she said the same.
She told PMnews:

"First of all, that is not true as I never spoke to Dr. Mike Adenuga. In fact, it will be a honour to speak with him. However, let us face the subject of speaking with my manager. FG - Fresh Ebola cases discovered, 139 Persons Placed On Surveillance

The Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu yesterday confirmed two new cases of  Ebola infection in Lagos, which now brings to nine, the number of cases recorded in Nigeria so far. According to Nigerian Tribune, He also announced that 139 people were currently under surveillance.

Professor Onyebuchi made these known while addressing newsmen in Lagos to give an update on the country’s situation as regards the disease which spread panic across the nation between Thursday and Friday morning. Dr. Kent Brantly, one of the two US doctors who contracted the Ebola virus in Liberia, has spoken out for the first time. He released a statement from his isolation room at Emory University in Atlanta where he's being treated after he was flown out of Liberia last week. NNPC shuts down clinic in Lagos over suspected patient with ebola virus

There was panic in Victoria Island today after a suspected Ebola patient was found to be admitted at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC clinic on Muri Okunola.

The patient was said to have first been admitted at First Consultant Medical Centre around the same time Liberian Patrick Sawyer was being treated at the clinic. Men suited in white safety clothing and an ambulance were seen at the hospital around one 1pm today.

Though there’s no definite confirmation that the patient is infected with Ebola, the Management of NNPC Clinic this evening announced the indefinite shutdown of the clinic.  The management said its a pre-emptive step and also said they have reported the issue to the Federal Ministry of Health as well as officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Health. Jonathan approved N1.9bn to fight Ebola

President Goodluck Jonathan has directed the Federal Ministry of Health to work in collaboration with the State Ministries of Health, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to ensure that all possible steps are taken to effectively contain the threat of the Ebola virus in line with international protocols and best practices.

In a statement in Abuja Friday, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati said the President Jonathan has also approved a Special Intervention Plan and the immediate release of N1.9 billion for its implementation. Continue...

Ebola: Two More Cases Confirmed In Lagos; Jonathan Summons Emergency Meeting

The Nigerian Government has confirmed two more cases of Ebola Virus Disease in Lagos. This brings to seven, the total number of confirmed cases of infected Nigerians, who are still alive and are isolated. Two others, including a nurse and Liberian national, Patrick Sawyer, have died of the disease. The federal government also said about 139 persons, who have had primary or secondary contact with the confirmed cases, are currently under surveillance.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has summoned an emergency meeting at the Presidential Villa over the EVD threat. Jonathan, who was scheduled to travel to Owerri, Imo State capital, canceled the trip to attend to the emergency.
