Earthquake Hits China’s Yunnan Promise, 367 Killed

More than 367 people are dead and almost 2000 have been injured in a strong earthquake which hit China’s mountainous southwest, bringing homes crashing to the ground and sparking a massive relief operation. The quake, which struck in the Zhaotong prefecture of provincial Yunnan on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, toppled buildings and left rescue teams and residents to pull survivors from beneath rubble, images on social media show.

“At least 367 people have been killed and 1881 people were injured,” the official news agency Xinhua reported early on Monday, citing rescuers and raising a previous toll given minutes earlier of 357.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake at a magnitude of 6.1 and said it struck at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres at 4.30pm. Continue...

‘Chibok Girls Being Used For Suicide Bombings’

The over 200 girls abducted from Government Secondary School, Chibok, in Borno State, may have exposed been exposed to radicalization by their captors, the Boko Haram insurgents, who are now using them for suicide bombings, Sunday Vanguard is reporting.

The newspaper quoted a source, who has contacts within the top hierarchy of the terrorist group.
The source spoke about the possibility that the girls had been indoctrinated by the terrorists in the last three months of their captivity, hypnotized and sent into various parts of Nigeria with a view to executing deadly missions.

The source spoke on the backdrop of the introduction of a new dimension to the terror attacks especially in the northern parts of Nigeria – the use of teenage female suicide bombers. Just last week, two of the attacks in Kano State were carried out by female suicide bombers even as the police in Katsina State arrested two girls between the ages of 10 and 18, alongside their male companion in Funtua. Bagauda Bridge Collapse: Kano Govt. Cautions Motorists Coming From Jos

The Kano State Government on Saturday in Kano advised motorists going to the state from Jos to divert to Kwanar Dangora through Rahama roundabout. The Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr Yunusa DanGwani, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the diversion became necessary because of the near collapse of Bagauda Bridge.

He said that the heavy rain that fell on Friday seriously affected the bridge which he said could collapse at any time NAN reports that the commissioner visited Bagauda dam on Saturday following report of the flood.

US to Test President Jonathan’s Aides for Ebola Before Meeting

There is Ebola scare in the land and nothing is being left to chance in the bid to curtail its spread. Ahead of the coming African/American Leaders Summit billed for Monday in Washington DC, United States, President Barack Obama, has said African participants attending will be screened for exposure to Ebola. President Goodluck Jonathan along with his aides are among the African expected to attend the event.
According to a Reuters, Obama said the action is to protect the US from the outbreak of the disease.

President Obama said, “Folks who are from these countries that have even a marginal risk, or an infinitesimal risk of having been exposed in some fashion, we’re making sure we’re doing screening.”

The United States, Obama said, takes risks from the deadly Ebola virus very seriously hence the planned test for the expected African leaders and their aides.

Also, two African leaders have said they would not attend the meeting because of the outbreak of the Ebola disease in their countries. The leaders are Presidents of Liberia and Sierra Leone, Mrs Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Ernest BaiKoroma, respectively. Continue...
