45 Dead in Pakistan Quake, New Island Emerges in Sea

People rush out their apartments and offices after they felt a major earthquake that struck Baluchistan province in southwest Pakistan, September 24, 2013
Officials in Pakistan say the death toll has reached 45 from a strong earthquake in the southwestern part of the country. The powerful earth movement Tuesday also caused the seabed to rise and create a small island.  Pakistani news channels showed images of the rocky terrain that rose from the sea off the country's southern coast. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a magnitude of 7.8 and an epicenter about 230 kilometers southwest of Dalbandin in Pakistan's Baluchistan province, which borders Afghanistan and Iran. Rescue teams have been dispatched to the affected areas and officials say the death toll is likely to rise. The dead include women and children.

"you're a very bad man," Girl Confronted Nairobi Militant

One of the Islamist attackers besieging a Nairobi shopping mall handed chocolate to a four-year-old British boy caught up in the crisis and asked for forgiveness, his uncle told a newspaper on Tuesday. Alex Coutts said the attacker took pity on the family and allowed them to escape, handing the children Mars bars as he told them: "Please forgive me, we are not monsters."

Kenya says 'defeated' mall militants, five dead, 11 held

Kenya's president said on Tuesday that his forces had "defeated" Islamists from Somalia's al Shabaab, had shot five of them dead and detained 11 others suspected of killing 67 people after storming a Nairobi shopping mall. It remained unclear after Uhuru Kenyatta addressed the nation on television whether the four-day security operation at the upmarket Westgate centre was completely over, or whether any militants were still at large or hostages unaccounted for.

"We have ashamed and defeated our attackers," Kenyatta said, adding that bodies were still trapped under rubble following the collapse of part of the building late in the operation. A fire began on Monday which officials said was started by the gunmen.

President Jonathan meets Obama, calls for concerted effort against terrorism

President Goodluck Jonathan Yesterday (Monday, September 23, 2013) in New York called for a stronger global consensus and determination to end the scourge of terrorism as quickly as possible. Speaking at talks with President Barrack Obama of the United States ahead of the opening of the 68th session of the United Nations on Tuesday, Mr. Jonathan said that unless the international community unites and deploys its enormous resources to eradicate terrorism, it will continue to be embarrassed by terrorist outrages such as the heinous attack on defenseless shoppers in Nairobi at the weekend which both leaders strongly condemned.

He expressed his appreciation of the support and assistance Nigeria has been receiving from the United States for its fight against domestic terrorism. He added, however, that Nigeria will welcome even more bilateral collaboration in this regard.
