Surprised story of how Boko Haram overrun Nigerian soldiers, massacre hundreds in Borno

Dressed in full military fatigue and armed with anti-aircraft guns, rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) and a fleet of armoured tanks that they stole from Nigerian soldiers, the Boko Haram insurgents now stage bolder attacks and even overrun federal  troops in northeast Nigeria. There are fears that the continued attacks on the military and the looting of arms by Boko Haram also threatens the fragile peace being enjoyed by residents of Maiduguri in the past three months. There are also concerns that Boko Haram’s continued attacks on  towns and villages located around a 100 km radius of Maiduguri, could possibly weaken the defence around the capital city.

ASUU vows to continue strike, blames NUC boss for rot in Nigerian universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has blamed the rot in the Nigerian university system on the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission, Julius Okojie, saying his failure to insist on quality has bastardised Nigerian universities. The lecturers also vowed to continue their strike unless the federal government honours the 2009 agreement it had with the union. In a statement signed by its University of Ibadan branch chairman, Olusegun Ajiboye, ASUU renewed its call for the scraping or a total overhaul of the regulatory institution if the nation wishes to get it right in university education management.

While calling on the National Assembly to beam its searchlight on the activities of the NUC, Mr. Ajiboye said the recent NEEDS assessment report on universities reflects how much the commission has failed in its duties as a regulator. According to him, the report undertaken by genuine academics contradicts NUC’s accreditation exercises which gave ‘controversial’ clean bill of health to most universities through “magomago accreditation.”

Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack in Kenyan shopping mall

At least 59 people have been confirmed killed and 175 injured in Saturday’s terrorist attack on a high-end shopping mall in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. The toll rose from 39 that was earlier announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday after two squads of suspected Islamist militants linked to Somali’s Al Shabaab stormed the shopping centre and shot people to death. Some of those killed were women. Interior minister, Joe Lenku, said 1,000 people had managed to escape from the Westgate centre after the assault.

A joint military operation between the army and police continued overnight into Sunday with intermittent gunshots heard from outside. The police said they had cornered the gunmen but standoff has continued. Witnesses say the attackers are between 10 and 15 and at least one of them is a woman who appeared to be one of the leaders. It is not known how many civilians remain trapped there – either as hostages or hiding from the militants.
